Police have identified the pedestrian struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Greenwich Village last weekend as Destiny Murrell, 22, of Brooklyn.
Murrell was walking in the crosswalk at Sixth Avenue near Washington Place last Saturday morning when a gray SUV hit her, according to police. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver did not stop, and the vehicle has not been recovered. The NYPD released Murrell’s name this week. As of the department’s most recent public update, no arrests had been made and the investigation remained open.
The crash falls within the 6th Precinct, which covers Greenwich Village, the West Village and the blocks around Washington Square Park.
Police have not released any image of the SUV or of a driver, and have not said publicly whether surveillance video from the intersection or from surrounding businesses has been recovered. That is often the decisive piece of evidence in a hit-and-run investigation, because a vehicle description as general as “gray SUV” narrows the field very little on its own.
Under state law, a driver involved in a crash that injures or kills someone is required to stop, remain at the scene and provide identifying information. Leaving the scene of a fatal collision is a felony in New York.
Detectives are asking anyone who was in the area early Saturday, or who has dashcam or doorbell footage from Sixth Avenue between Washington Place and the surrounding blocks, to come forward.
