A film crew is set to shoot scenes for an upcoming A24 movie starring Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey in the Village on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
According to flyers flagged to @OLV on X, scenes for a production called “Funny Strange” will be filmed at 6th Avenue and Waverly Place.
The same title showed up on notices posted along Avenue A in February, and residents traced it to A24’s adaptation of Holly Brickley’s novel “Deep Cuts,” according to EV Grieve. A casting listing for “Funny Strange” background actors on Casting Networks also describes the project as “Deep Cuts,” following characters Percy Marks and Joe Morrow from Berkeley to Brooklyn.
The film is a love story about two music-obsessed twentysomethings working through ambition, belonging and adulthood over the course of the 2000s, according to TheWrap. Sean Durkin, who directed “The Iron Claw,” is writing and directing. Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie are producing through their Central Pictures banner, and Grammy winner Blake Mills is creating original music for the film, TheWrap reported.
Spaeny plays Percy and Starkey plays Joe, according to Russh. The two took over the lead roles from Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler, who were previously attached to the project, EV Grieve noted, citing Deadline.
Casting calls for shoot dates in February and March show the production using New York to stand in for several eras and places. Producers sought California college students for scenes set in Berkeley in 2000, San Francisco indie music fans for scenes set there in 2006 and filmed in Manhattan, and Columbia University types for a grad student house party set in New York in 2003.
Russh included “Deep Cuts” in a roundup of A24’s 2027 films, but no release date was listed.
