Sworl, a frozen yogurt shop built around protein, opened in Greenwich Village on Saturday, October 10, and it’s already racked up more than 50 Google reviews in its first week.
The shop is located at 192 Bleecker Street and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Sworl says its soft serve has about 160 calories, at least 20 grams of protein, at least 7 grams of fiber and under 9 grams of sugar, though it doesn’t say what serving size those figures are based on. Its menu puts those numbers up against traditional froyo, which it lists at under 6 grams of protein and more than 30 grams of sugar, and says the recipe was more than 18 months in the making. The menu also says there are no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners.
There are four flavors: Whipped Vanilla, Coconut Ube, Peanut Butter Miso and Sea Salt Cacao. Sworl describes the ube as purple yam with notes of toasted coconut and vanilla, and the cacao as a bittersweet chocolate made with three types of cacao, a hint of burnt caramel and a sea salt finish.
A build-your-own cup costs $9 for a small and $11 for a large, with toppings at $1.50 each. Most of the toppings come from brands like Magic Spoon, Purely Elizabeth and One Trick Pony, alongside fresh bananas, strawberries and plantain chips, and roasted Japanese sweet potatoes are listed as coming soon. There’s also a $15 tasting menu of six preset bowls, each listed at 33 to 41 grams of protein. The highest-protein option, the Strength Stack (41 grams), pairs Whipped Vanilla with almond butter granola, Magic Spoon cereal, wild blueberries, dark chocolate crisps and crunchy peanut butter.
As of Friday morning, Sworl had a 4.4-star rating from 54 reviews on Google. Most of the written reviews are glowing, with customers praising the texture, the friendly staff and the Coconut Ube and Peanut Butter Miso flavors. One reviewer called it the best frozen yogurt in the city.
Not everyone was won over. A handful of reviewers said the flavors were bland or the price was too high, with one describing the soft serve as creamy but “flavorless.” Another said their order came to $19 after tax and tip. One customer said two of the flavors they wanted were unavailable on opening day because the machines weren’t working.
Several commenters on Sworl’s Instagram have also asked for a dairy-free option. Every bowl on the tasting menu lists milk as an allergen.
