A fast-casual chain that made its American debut at Chelsea Market in 2018, where crowds lined up for whole roasted cauliflower and pitas stuffed with everything from lamb kebab to ratatouille, is getting ready to open its first West Village location. The chain now has outposts across Manhattan, plus Los Angeles and Las Vegas, but it’s never had a spot below 14th Street until now.
Miznon is opening at 38 Carmine Street, between Bleecker and Bedford. Signage was recently shared by Instagram account @newopeningsnyc, and the restaurant’s website lists the address as “coming soon” alongside a second forthcoming location near Columbia University.
Miznon (Hebrew for “canteen”) was created by Israeli chef Eyal Shani, who opened the first one in Tel Aviv in 2011 and has since expanded it to Paris, Vienna, Melbourne, Singapore, London and Toronto. Shani’s Good People Group runs more than 50 restaurants worldwide, including several in New York: HaSalon in Hell’s Kitchen, the kosher Malka, and Shmoné on West 8th Street, which earned a Michelin star in 2023. Miznon is his most casual concept, built around an open kitchen and a menu that changes with the season.
The pita is the main event. Sample menus from Miznon’s other locations include a rib eye minute steak with tahini and tomato salsa, a rotisserie “broken chicken” with za’atar, a falafel burger, and the ratatouille pita, which comes with a hard-boiled egg tucked inside. Outside the pita, there’s the “original world famous baby cauliflower,” a whole head roasted until it’s charred and tender, and the “run over potato,” a baked potato flattened and perfumed with garlic, dill and scallions. Prices at existing New York locations mostly land in the high teens to low twenties for pitas, and a menu specific to Carmine Street hasn’t been posted yet.
